Säilöttyja sillipaloja hapankermakastikkeessa missä silakanmätiä ja sipulia.
Silliä syödään usein keitettyjen perunoiden, smetanan, hienonnetun ruohosipulin, voimakkaan kovan juuston, joskus keitettyjen kananmunien ja tietysti näkkileivän kanssa.
Silliä on runsaasti sekä Pohjanmerellä että Itämerellä, joten pohjoismaalaiset ovat säilöneet keskiajalta lähtien, lähinnä kalojen säilyttämiseksi varastointia ja kuljetusta varten.
